International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

GCIT is the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Examination Centre for the Gold Coast region in the South Eastern corner of Queensland, Australia. Tests are administered approximately twice a month. IELTS is the world's leading test of English for higher education, immigration and employment. IELTS is recognised by more than 6,000 institutions in over 135 countries including Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK and the USA. IELTS is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), British Council and IDP:IELTS Australia. IELTS conforms to the highest international standards of language assessment.

About the IELTS test

The IELTS exam covers four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. IELTS is not recommended for candidates under the age of 16. It is offered in two test formats, Academic and General Training. All candidates take the same listening and speaking modules and there is an option of either Academic or General Training in reading and writing modules.

Academic Training is suitable for candidates commencing higher education study, including TAFE or who are seeking professional registration. General Training is suitable for candidates commencing non-academic training, work experience or for immigration purposes.

The cost for sitting the IELTS exam is $330 GST free and $363 GST inclusive. Please complete the GST Identifier Form (DOC, 182 KB) and attach it to your application.

All candidates who register for an IELTS test in Australia must have their right index finger scanned and photo taken before each test for which they have registered (ID capture). Finger scans and photos will be taken on the day of your test.

An email detailing all test day information will be sent to you no later than Wednesday before your test day.

Results

Provisional test results can usually be viewed online on the 13th day after your test. Your official test result form (TRF) is usually posted to you on the 13th day. If your results are lost in the post, a copy cannot be issued, therefore, to ensure you receive your results you can provide us with a Registered Post envelope which is available from the Post Office.

Apply online to take the IELTS Test

1. Complete the online registration form.
2. Post the following items to the IELTS Centre within five working days:
  • Photocopy of the personal details page of your passport. If your passport has expired, include a copy of the page showing the extension date.
  • Two identical photos which meet the guidelines in the Notice to Candidates section of the Application Form.
  • GST Identifier Form (downloadable from above link)
  • Payment by cheque, money order or credit card. Credit card details to be entered onto the GST Identifier Form. A receipt will be posted to the address provided on your application form. The receipt is confirmation of your booking.

Alternatively, you can bring these items to lodge your application in person at Ashmore, Coolangattaor Southport using cash, EFTPOS or credit card or post your application to:

Online applications are not available in the last 2 weeks before any test date. Applications within the last two weeks must be made in person.

Cancellations

If you cancel more than five weeks before your test, you will be charged a cancellation fee of 25 per cent. If you cancel within five weeks of the exam date, you will not receive a refund. However, please inform us that you will not be attending. Within five weeks of the test, the exam fee is non-refundable unless satisfactory evidence, in English, of serious illness or serious cause e.g. bereavement or trauma is provided no later than 5 working days after the exam date.

Transfers

Transfers must be requested in person more than five weeks before the original test date and be for an available test in the next three months. If you transfer more than five weeks before your test, a transfer fee of $75 (exc. GST) will be charged. 

Enquiry on Results

If you are unhappy with your test result, you can apply for a re-mark (Enquiry on Results). You must make the application no later than six weeks after the test date. You can choose which test components are re-marked. There is a fee of $176 for this service which will be refunded if your score on any component is increased. Enquiries on Results take six to eight weeks to complete. You must lodge an enquiry on results in person at the GCIT IELTS booking office. You will need your passport and original Test Results Form.
